This is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things

keyinjpop suggested I watch the new AKB48 PV and report my thoughts on it. So, I did. I present to you, myself ripping the guts out of Heavy Rotation, or as I’d like to call it “Hot & Heavy Rotation.”

Uhhh... 'scuse me. Just how old are you, anyway?

If that cover isn’t bad enough… I think it’s funny how I just posted a long nonsensical rant about how sexual imagery has gotten out of hand, then this PV gets shoved in my face.

At first, the video starts out nice and innocent. You think it’s going to be okay. They’re wearing black military jackets (I swear I have the same one in white!) and the music sounds all cute and happy. Just when you’re getting comfortable, thinking they’re going to sing (fully clothed) in those nice jackets for the duration of the video… BAM! There they are, in lingerie having a pillow fight, no less. I gulped in agony and fear that my experience with this video was about to go horribly, horribly wrong. We all know that cute girls having a pillow fight is a stereotypical male fantasy, for reasons I have yet to wrap my female brain around.

Then, after some jumping all over each other in said lingerie, I felt my moon pie from breakfast beginning to make a return trip to my mouth. Ugh. But, alas! They return to wearing those stupid jackets, which I have come to hate. I’m glad I decided to buy a white one because if mine were black, I’d be burning it right now instead of blogging. “Don’t give me that crap,” I thought. “Don’t be acting all sexy like that and then try to come back all innocent-like. I know what you’re up to, and I don’t like it!”

The song’s not even that good. “I want yooooou…. I need yoooooou….” Brilliant lyrics! Who wrote them, Barney the dinosaur?

Just when you think this can’t get any worse, they all suddenly become furries. Yeah. You also get bathtub shots and plenty of kisses exchanged. A man had to have created this video. There is no other possible explanation.

Personally, I was insulted by the degrading nature of the video. I understand that AKB48 is a hot item right now, especially among men and they are definitely trying to play into that demographic. I get that, and because of this reason the single’s sales are probably going to go through the roof.

What are you opinions on this PV?

Oricon Overrun By Johnny’s Entertainment

First of all, thanks to aramatheydidnt for posting this article.

Its June, people! The year is halfway over, so its only fitting that Oricon release their mid-year sales information. If you look at the single charts, you’ll see that it is group central. ARASHI, yet again, has claimed the #1 spot with Troublemaker. Not only that, but the #2 spot as well with Monster. The Johnny’s lovin’ doesn’t stop there as KAT-TUN takes the #4 spot. The other two singles are both by AKB48. It is interesting to me how each of the top 5 singles were created by groups. (pretty large groups too) I wonder why these are so huge among fans of j-music right now.

The album charts are slightly more varied, with artist like Ikimono Gakari and Kaela Kimura featured. Namie Amuro holds the #1 spot with PAST > FUTURE. I can attribute this to Namie’s massive resurgence in popularity following 60s 70s 80s, as well as a well-timed release for the album. Plus the fact that it was really good, in my opinion.

More Johnny’s lovin’ in the music DVD category, which is one I usually overlook.

If I could predict, I would say that Troublemaker isn’t going to budge from the #1 single slot this year. The only question is, how much longer will this Johnny’s fanaticism last? What will be the next huge musical trend?

This Is Just Plain “Cruel”

THREE IS ENOUGH KTHX!!!

I think I may be eating my words from this post. Yeah, yeah, I still think its cool that Beckii is enjoying herself with her career and entertaining her fortysomething year old perv fanbase, but enough is enough. If you’ve been keeping up with the Cruel Angels, as in reading the Beckii thread at Jpopmusic you’ll know that since Beckii’s popularity soared, a whole crop of girls calling themselves Cruel Girls have started posting their pathetic, talentless videos on YouTube in hopes of being just like Beckii.

New flash, girlies. Beckii, Sarah, and Gemma GOT LUCKY. We can’t all be Cruel Angels, mmmkay? Stop copying! I’m not about to sit here and watch an all-gaijin AKB48/MoMusu style unit get formed. Noooo sankyuu. That would be a “cruel” thing to do to the Japanese music industry. I’ll be excited when this cute-thin-gaijin-girls-jumping-around-on-Youtube fad goes down the toilet and we can all go back to reality.

Do I still love Beckii? As a person, yes. She’s still sweet and adorable as ever. But from a professional point of view, I want to smack her for creating this terrible monster.

Pointless/offensive rant is over.
